The picture or décor is first printed on a special paper with special sublimation color. Die printing or digital printing is common.
In a Meyer heating press this sublimation paper is laid on the material that has to be printed. The high temperatures and the high pressure in the heating press allow now that the color pigments on the paper are sublimating. This means that the pigments switch to gas and penetrate deep in the material. After some seconds the complete color is sublimated into the material. After the press opens again the paper can be removed. In some cases the material needs to be cooled down to avoid any deformations.
